Kat Von D is one of the biggest names in beauty right now, and for good reason. Her self-titled range of makeup products are flying off the shelves at Sephora, and her ‘Shade and Light’ palette is single handedly responsible for chiseling the cheekbones of beauty addicts the world over.
Which is why this week, when Kat publicly denounced the actions of her former friend and fellow beauty maven, Jeffree Star, the world took notice.
On Monday, Von D shared an image of Jeffree with a rather crude cross superimposed over his image and an even more cutting caption. “After years of making excuses for, and rationalizing Jeffree’s inappropriate behavior, I can no longer hold my tongue.”
Kat Von D and Jeffree Star have held a very highly publicised friendship since the beginnings of their careers, which is why this post came as a huge shock to the beauty community. Von D is responsible for almost all of Jeffree Star’s tattoos, as well as naming one of her Everlasting Lipsticks after him. She confirmed via Instagram that she would be pulling the shade ‘Jeffree’ from her collection.
In her initial Instagram post, the star was pretty vague on the reasons why herself and Jeffree had had a falling out, but she told fans to stay tuned for a video that would explain the entire situation.
Jeffree Star has been involved in controversy recently for a number of pretty questionable actions. He’s been accused of being a racist after video emerged of him saying he would throw battery acid over an African American woman to “lighten her skin”, as well as recently alienating a lot of his fans after leaving scathing comments on any beauty bloggers review of his products that doesn’t rave about them.
Von D is just the latest in a slew of industry people who have distanced themselves from the controversial makeup maven, and her video explanation of her reasons for leaving Jeffree behind is pretty unbelievable.
“I think it’s important for me that my fans and followers know where I stand with this, because the way that Jeffree chooses to live his life and treat other people is not something I personally agree with,” she says.
“The way he treats his fans and brands and anyone who even intimidates him slightly he just attacks,” she continues, “I always romanticized this part of Jeffree that was different and I’ve always thought that was something he would strive for but I don’t think that’s the case anymore.”
Kat details how she was actually the driving factor behind Jeffree starting his makeup line, introducing him to the factory that produced her own products as well as hooking him up with a graphic designer who designed his current logo. Now here’s where it gets juicy. Kat claims that Jeffree never paid that designer, whose name is B.J, and that he continues to his design to this day without ever crediting him or paying him for his work.
The hashtag #paybj started trending on Instagram and Twitter immediately after Kat’s video was posted, but Jeffree is yet to come back with any evidence to extricate himself from this drama. Stay tuned.
