We cannot believe that The Devil Wears Prada turned 10 last week. Over the last decade, it’s given us endless quotes and a few classic gifs and is still just as relevant and perfect today as it was a decade ago. Despite being one of our go to girls night movies, there are a couple of interesting facts you probably didn’t know about the flick.
1. Meryl Streep originally turned down the role
Can you imagine this movie without Meryl Streep? Neither can we. Streep originally turned down the role of Miranda Priestly because she said their initial offer was “not reflective of my value to the project”. They doubled their offer and the rest is history.
2. The movie took less than 2 months to film
It took Fox years to bring the project to the big screen, after buying the rights to the book it was based on before it was even finished being written. Whilst the pre-production took ages, filming took place over just 55 days in New York city.
3. Rachel McAdams was going to play Andy
Fox really wanted Rachel McAdams to play the leading role of Andy Sax in the movie. She turned down the role multiple times because she wanted to separate herself from mainstream material and go down a more artsy route.
4. Meryl Streep made a few changes to her character
Streep changed the last line from “everybody wants to be me” to “everybody wants to be us” and the whole crew rolled with it. The director originally envisioned Miranda to have a loud, barking voice, but Streep decided that a whisper would be much more effective.
5. 100 actresses auditioned for the role of Emily
The role of Miranda’s sassy assistant Emily was highly auditioned for, but Emily Blunt got the role without even going for it. She was in town filming for Eragon and her agent insisted she try out for The Devil Wears Prada. The director changed the Emily character to be British after her first try out.
