She may be the face of the brands new line but Calvin Klein doesn’t like Kendall Jenner. The labels founder and namesake sold the company to fashion heavyweight PVH for a cool $400 million back in 2002, but he still has some pretty strong opinions on its direction over the last few years.
When asked about his opinion on the Kendall Jenner/ Justin Bieber marketing campaign over the past year, the iconic designer said, “You know, I’m really not that familiar with it. I’m honestly not.”
“I’m sure she’s a lovely young woman but it’s not the kind of thing I would have done, even today.” He made these comments whilst speaking at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he got really riled up on the state of the modeling and marketing industries.
“Now, models are paid for how many followers they have. They’re booked not because they represent the essence of the designer, which is what I tried to do – they’re booked because of how many followers they have online. I don’t think that, long term, is going to work.”
Calvin Klein is no stranger to killer marketing campaigns, and whilst he was at the helm the brand was responsible for some of the most iconic advertising in fashion history. Everyone can remember the super sexy shoot during the 90s featuring supermodel Kate Moss and bad boy Mark Wahlberg in various states of undress.
Surprisingly, Calvin Klein had nothing but praise for the choice of Justin Bieber as the new face of the brand. “I thought that was really good”, he said, “I like Justin Bieber in the Calvin Klein Underwear campaign because I like him – not because he’s got millions of followers.”
