In honor of the 10-year anniversary of The Hills airing on MTV, we’ve decided to take a look back and drop some little known facts about the smash hit series. Here are the 10 things you didn’t know about The Hills, as told by its cast members.
1. Lauren got paid a lot more than everyone else
This can only be expected since she was pretty much the star of the show and had a hell of a lot more airtime than the other three girls. Heidi confirmed this in an interview with Buzzfeed, saying, “obviously Lauren got paid the most – it was her show. Cast members did all make different salaries, so we wanted to do like Jersey Shore and unite together and all get a bigger pay check, but everyone was a little bit too divided.” It was estimated that Lauren recieved $75,000 per episode. That's one hell of a pay check.
2. Heidi’s job at Bolthouse was totally fabricated
“That whole plot was scripted,” says Heidi, who spent her time on The Hills ‘working’ as an event coordinator at PR company Bolthouse. So what about her controversial promotion? “I definitely did not get the promotion over Elodie! She really worked there and I pretend worked there, so it was obviously a pretend promotion for her to be upset about.”
3. The cast’s expressions were taken totally out of context
You know all those times it looked like the girls were giving each other the stink eye? Turns out that was just a bit of editing magic. Lo Bosworth revealed how the producers captured those unflattering expressions and manipulated them for the storyline: “When you’re in production on a show you have to do something called 'taking the room tone' so everyone would have to be quiet,” she said, “they would catch us gazing off into space and looking really bored and then they’d edit those clips into the show to make it look like we were super mad at each other.”
4. Brody and Lauren were never an item
In perhaps the biggest bombshell ever, Brody revealed to Yahoo that he and Lauren were never dating. “Lauren’s a dear friend of mine, and it was pretty funny to have to live that reality. We were just friends. We’d film a scene of us kissing or being in this lovey-dovey scene, and then right after it would be like, ‘cut’ and we’d be like, ‘great to see you’, and we’d go our separate ways.”
5. There was an alternate ending
Remember that epic series finale where the set screen dropped and basically confirmed what we all already knew about the whole thing being scripted? Well, it almost didn’t happen. The Hills filmed an alternative ending which involved Brody bidding farewell to Kristin Cavallari and returning to his mystery girlfriends house (who was rumoured to be Avril Lavigne – oh the 2000’s!) and having that mystery girlfriend be Lauren. That would have been kind of amazing, but we love that they stuck with the edgier original ending.
