The recent Olympics had our jaws to the floor in sheer awe. But this reaction wasn’t generated from any act of physical prowess – it was over the synchronized swimming teams crazy amazing makeup.
Their makeup and hair managed to look totally flawless before, during and after their vigorous underwater routine. This pretty much defies the laws of physics, seeing as we can barely get our winged eyeliner to last through the day let alone stay put splashing around under water.
We were determined to find out their secret, so we did a little digging. Turns out that there is one secret ingredient in all of their beauty products, and it’s this – volatile silicone oil. Whilst it may sound a little intense, it’s pretty much oil that causes the beauty products to evaporate onto your skin until wiped off with specialist remover.
Seeing as we already know that oil based products repel water, this seems to make sense. A lot of the waterproof products you know and love were originally created for the sport of synchronized swimming. Make Up For Ever was actually commissioned by the French synchronized swimming team to create their beauty products, and so their Aqua line was born.
The athletes rely on their makeup to stay put throughout their routine, because they are actually scored on it. Their presentation contributes a significant portion of marks to their overall score. Their looks are often designed by professional makeup artists, who teach each team member how to achieve it on their own so they can replicate it before competitions.
But it isn’t just the makeup that doesn’t budge. You will never see a synchronised swimmer with a baby hair out of place, because they apply a special combination of gelatin and hot water throughout their hair. Once brushed through, it hardens to cement like consistency – which sounds horrible, but is apparently great for your hair.
Feel free to try out any of these synchronised swimming hacks at your next pool party – but maybe skip the hair helmet.
