For some of us, a dry, flaky scalp is a constant downer on our beauty routine. We’re betting you’ve tried every treatment under the sun – anti-dandruff shampoos, over the counter medicine and even coconut oil. If those haven’t worked, you might want to try Listerine.
You heard that right. Apparently, mouthwash could be the answer to all your flaky scalp problems. Beauty blogger Farah Dukhai has made a name for herself by utilizing somewhat surprising products you have in your own home and turning them into beauty products that work. Her latest hack is using Listerine as a dandruff treatment.
Dukhai recommends spritzing a blend of half water, half Listerine onto the scalp and allowing to set for a few minutes before rinsing with water. “Listerine has menthol, thymol, eucalyptol and methyl salicylate – all of which make it an antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and perfect for getting rid of dandruff,” she explained on her Instagram post.
Menthol and thymol are analgesics, which mean that they should help to soothe the area and stop itching, whilst eucalyptol is a proven antifungal, which will help to combat the root cause of your dandruff. Like with all new treatments, you should always consult your dermatologist before testing it out.
